What Makes an Author’s World Unique? By A.F. Stewart

Hi Everyone! As part of OWS CyCon 2019, I’m hosting a blog post by a fellow fantasy author. Keep reading for more fascinating insights…

As part of the OWS CyCon 2019, we asked our fantasy authors to write about what makes their world, or the world of another author unique. Each of them has come up with very different answers which reflect their writing processes, their research methods, and their views on world building.

We hope you find these insights interesting, and that they maybe give you some new things to think about when you pick up a new book, or even start writing your own.

After reading this interview, be sure to check out the responses from our other fantastic writers: https://owscycon.ourwriteside.com/fantasy-events-at-cycon/fantasy-blog-tour-what-makes-an-authors-world-unique/

What Makes an Author’s World Unique?

By A.F. Stewart

What makes my fantasy world unique?

First, it takes place mostly on the high seas so it is, at its heart, a nautical adventure tale.

Second, the main character, Captain Rafe Morrow, who is in command of the ship Celestial Jewel, is a god. That’s right, not a demi-god, not a half-blood, but he is a full-blown deity, the Gods of Souls, essentially a god of the underworld.

Which leads me to point three in what makes my world unique: ghosts are part of the ship’s crew. How does that work? Well, the ship, Celestial Jewel, was built in the land of the gods and the dead, called the After World, so any ghost on board has a physical form. Plus, the ship is magic and a bit sentient. Ghosts can also roam the world, but out there, they cannot be seen or heard, or interact with anyone.

And now we come to the fourth point of uniqueness. The peculiar dysfunctional gods and their, um, odd, relationships. Two of Rafe’s sisters try to kill him, the series villain has a past with Rafe’s mom, and there are other secrets best left for the readers. And then there are the Goddess of the Moon’s children…

Which is point five: Sea Monsters. Yes, the children of the Goddess of the Moon are sea monsters. Creatures that roam the seas feasting on the uncrossed souls of drowned sailors with names like wolf eels, scuttle squids, sea wyrms and, of course, a kraken (okay maybe that one isn’t unique, but hey, every sea tale needs a kraken).

So that’s a little about the oddities of my world. I hope you found it entertaining.
